The Aeritalia G-222 twin-engine transport aircraft was designed in the late 1960s by the renowned engineer Giuseppe Gabrielli, known for fighter designs such as the G.55 and G.91. It was created to meet a specific need of the Italian Air Force for a tactical transport aircraft that is smaller than the four-engine Lockheed C-130 Hercules, capable of taking off and landing on short and unprepared runways. The two turboprop engines allow the G-222 to reach speeds of 480 km/h, and it is characterized by excellent maneuverability even when fully loaded. Since 2005, it has been progressively replaced by its evolution, the C-27J Spartan.

The Alenia C-27J Spartan is a significantly updated and improved version of the G-222 tactical transport aircraft. It is equipped with two powerful Rolls-Royce AE2100-D2 turboprop engines that enable speeds of over 600 km/h. The Spartan can carry up to 68 soldiers or 46 fully equipped paratroopers, or over 11 tons of materials. The version supplied to the Italian Air Force includes two head-up displays, a digital cockpit, and advanced avionics systems that provide all-weather capabilities in the most challenging operational areas. It has also been utilized in Afghanistan to support military and humanitarian operations.
