Ships must find a safe harbor or sink. The lake, it is said, never gives up its dead, as Gordon Lightfoot poignantly sang in "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald." The Mataafa storm from November 27 to 28, 1905, claimed the lives of 36 sailors on 29 wrecked ships, including the schooner Madeira, which sank on the rocks of Silver Bay, Minnesota. It was decided to build a lighthouse near the site to guide future mariners. Perched on a 133-foot cliff, the Split Rock Lighthouse, which was first lit on July 31, 1910, quickly became a tourist attraction and remains one of the most picturesque and visited lighthouses in the United States.
