Trumpeter USS Maryland BB-46 1941

USS Maryland (BB-46) is the second ship of the Colorado class battleship. Built in 1917 at the Newport News shipyard, it was launched in 1920 and entered service in 1921. USS Maryland primarily focused on training and participated in various fleet problem-solving exercises. In 1941, during the Japanese Navy's attack on Pearl Harbor, USS Maryland was also attacked and sustained damage in the harbor. After the attack, Maryland returned for repairs and underwent modernization. In 1942, USS Maryland returned to combat and participated in the battles of the Gilbert and Marshall Islands, the Mariana Islands, and Palau, as well as the Battle of Leyte Gulf. After this battle, USS Maryland was hit by a kamikaze aircraft and had to withdraw for repairs. Following the Battle of Okinawa, Maryland assisted Allied forces during the occupation of Japan and then returned home. USS Maryland was retired in 1947 and was sold for dismantling in 1959.
