The model is a replica of the Ki-61-Id Hien. The Ki-61-Id featured a nose that was 20 cm longer than the standard model, as well as a 20 mm cannon and 12.7 mm machine guns in the wings. In fact, this variant was the most produced Hien variant, with 1,360 units manufactured. Due to its superior performance at high altitudes, this aircraft was often tasked with neutralizing incoming US B29 bombers in the skies over Japan's home islands.
