The USS Hornet was completed in 1941 as the third aircraft carrier of the Yorktown class. It is especially known for its central role in the so-called Doolittle Raid on April 18, 1942, the first US airstrike on the Japanese home islands. Just a few months later, in October 1942, the Hornet was heavily damaged by Japanese bombers in the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands and ultimately sunk on October 27. Most of the crew was rescued by American escort ships, but 111 men lost their lives. The detailed TAMIYA model kit includes parts for the aircraft carrier as well as components for 16 B-25 bombers.
