Like her sister ship, HMS Rodney, the Nelson was equipped with three 40.6 cm triple gun turrets, positioned in the well-protected forward section of the ship. At times, she served as the flagship of the Royal Navy and primarily operated alongside her sister ship HMS Rodney. During World War II, the Nelson was part of the Home Fleet and participated in the search for various German warships. From 1941, she supported the Allied landings in North Africa and later the landing in Sicily. During the Normandy landings in the summer of 1944, she struck two mines.
