The smallest dust particles (fine dust), which are not visible to the naked eye, are generated among other things by combustion processes (such as diesel engines, heating systems, fireplaces, and cigarette smoke, printer toner) or mechanical abrasion. Due to their minimal size, fine dust penetrates almost unhindered through the mucous membranes. It accumulates in the lungs and is distributed throughout the body via the bloodstream. Inflammation can be triggered as a result. According to an EU study, approximately 65,000 people die each year in Germany due to the effects of fine dust pollution. Alarming levels in German city centers almost daily make headlines and increasingly lead to traffic diversions. This occurs on heavily trafficked roads, indoors from copiers, printers, cigarette smoke, abrasion, or cooking fumes. It has been proven that pollution levels in homes and apartments are many times higher than outdoors.
