The first Seiko 5, the Seiko Sportmatic 5, was developed in 1963. It was the first automatic watch made by Seiko and indeed the first in Japan to feature a day-date display. "5" was the promise that every Seiko 5 has five key attributes: an automatic movement, a day-date display at the 3 o'clock position, water resistance, a recessed crown at the 4 o'clock position, and a case and bracelet designed for durability. Together, and in combination with the newly developed springs and shock resistance systems of the time, these features gave the Seiko 5 models their distinctive look and strength.
