At the IAA 1975, VW presented a vehicle that was initially developed without the board's knowledge. This sporty variant of the Golf 1 offered the characteristics that define a true sports car: a low curb weight combined with a powerful engine. Available from 1976, the incredibly fast GTI revolutionized the automotive world. Now, there was an everyday, affordable sports car that could easily compete with the expensive rivals. The sports car segment was effectively democratized by the 110 hp GTI.
