Product details
In 1625, Swedish King Gustav II Adolf commissioned the construction of the Vasa as the flagship of his Baltic fleet. Under the guidance of a Dutch shipbuilder, 400 craftsmen carried out the work at the royal shipyard in Stockholm. The hull, built from oak and featuring two gun decks, was completed in early 1628. The Vasa was then adorned with over 700 opulent carved and gilded sculptures and ornaments, making it a ship of impressive splendor. With a length of 69 meters and 72 cannons, this warship, named after the ruling royal house, was one of the largest of its time. Urgently needed by the king for the war against Poland, the Vasa set sail on August 10, 1628, from Stockholm harbor for its ceremonial maiden voyage. After a gust of wind, water rushed in through the open gun ports, and within moments, the Vasa sank before the eyes of the gathered crowd. 328 years later, the Vasa was rediscovered in Stockholm harbor and was raised in 1961. Extensive efforts to recover parts of the ship, its reconstruction, and conservation are still ongoing. Since 1990, this unique and nearly complete ship has been on display at the Vasa Museum in Stockholm.
