Revell Sailing ship VASA

In 1625, Swedish King Gustav II Adolf commissioned the construction of the Vasa as the flagship of his Baltic fleet. Under the guidance of a Dutch shipbuilder, 400 craftsmen executed the work at the royal shipyard in Stockholm. The hull, built from oak and featuring two gun decks, was completed in early 1628. With over 700 opulent carved and gilded sculptures and ornaments, the Vasa was outfitted to be a ship of impressive splendor. Measuring 69 meters in length and armed with 72 cannons, this warship, named after the ruling royal house, was one of the largest of its time. Urgently needed by the king for the war against Poland, the Vasa set sail on its ceremonial maiden voyage from Stockholm harbor on August 10, 1628. After a gust of wind, water rushed through the open gun ports, and within moments, the Vasa sank before the eyes of the gathered crowd. 328 years later, the Vasa was rediscovered in Stockholm harbor and was raised in 1961. The extensive search for parts of the ship, its reconstruction, and conservation efforts are still ongoing. Since 1990, this unique and nearly complete ship has been on display at the Vasa Museum in Stockholm.
