At the IAA 1975, VW presented a vehicle that was initially developed without the knowledge of the board. This sporty variant of the Golf 1 offered the characteristics that define a true sports car: a low curb weight combined with a powerful engine. Available from 1976, the incredibly fast GTI revolutionized the automotive world. Now, there was an everyday sports car accessible to everyone, capable of keeping up with the expensive competition without any issues. The sports car segment was effectively democratized by the 110-hp GTI. Wheel arch extensions, wider wheels, a large front spoiler, and a red trim around the front grille characterize this compact athlete, which accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 9.2 seconds and quickly becomes an icon.
