The Panavia Tornado is a joint project of the German, British, and Italian aerospace industries that revolutionized military aviation in the 1970s. Its innovative variable-sweep wing design allowed for the first time the combination of short takeoff capability, high subsonic speed in low flight, and efficient cruising characteristics. The IDS variant (Interdiction/Strike) was specifically developed for air-to-ground attacks, while the British GR.1 was designed as a multirole variant. To this day, the Tornado shapes the image of modern air forces and is considered a milestone in European aviation technology.
