Product details
The AEC Routemaster was first publicly presented in 1954. Compared to previous bus types, the Routemaster was considered innovative with its integral design of chassis and body. Notably, the open entry platform at the rear left allowed for quick boarding and alighting, which characterized the double-decker that was produced in series starting in 1958. By the late 1950s, changed regulations also permitted the operation of buses over nine meters long on just two axles. Some Routemasters were subsequently split in the middle, with an additional section added that was identifiable by square windows. The bus type, known as the Routemaster long, or RML for short, now accommodated a total of 72 passengers. The success of 15 test vehicles convinced London Transport to order an additional 500 units of the RML, which were produced from 1965 to 1968. In the 1970s, more and more RMLs served in central London. With the constant presence of the iconic red double-decker on almost all routes, the image of the Routemaster became a typical landmark of London. It was not until 2005, after nearly 50 years of service, that the general operation of this flagship of London was discontinued. Routemaster is a registered trademark of Transport for London.
The model features a multi-part body, a detailed representation of surface textures, a complete passenger area with 72 seats, a detailed cockpit, a multi-part Leyland and Scania engine, a movable engine hood, a multi-part underbody, rotating wheels, a typical open entrance area, two separate passenger levels, and an optionally removable roof segment. It includes many clear parts and decals for two RML versions. Figures are not included in the kit.
