The Hawker Tempest had Axis engineers pulling their hair out during World War II.

With around 800 units built, the Mk V of the Tempest series established itself as the most powerful fighter and fighter-bomber of the Allied forces starting in 1944. As one of the fastest fighter aircraft of World War II, the propeller-driven Tempest V was capable of taking on even the German jet fighter Me262.

It became famous as the "V1 interceptor." With a top speed of up to 696 km/h, this fighter aircraft could track and shoot down cruise missiles before they could cause damage.
