Ubiquiti UniFi Express
Ubiquiti UniFi Express
Unfortunately, I bought the device from Ubiquiti's EU shop and overlooked the limit of 5 devices. Most people in my environment who opt for Ubiquiti have more than 4 additional devices, such as switches and APs.
The device is marketed enormously, lots of "influencers" on YouTube etc. praise it extensively, unfortunately without pointing out this limitation. I realise that my 2-star rating is very high if the device is sufficient for the specific area of application. However, my suspicion is that Ubiquiti has built in an artificial restriction to attract new customers and then sell them more expensive products and services.

I’m usually ubiquiti’s biggest proponent and I bought this product directly from ubiquiti day one of its release in 2023. After pulling my hair out after a month of use, and using the official release firmware (updated since purchase) I can unequivocally state that this product doesn’t work as advertised.
The internet routing speed dwindles after a few days to c. 100mbps, down from ~930mbps (using computers plugged directly into the lan port). The unit will also freeze and overheat.
If you want to spend a few minutes on UniFi’s official forums you find dozens of people with the same issues. UniFi is not acknowledging this publicly. Their support team is good willing and tries to help but can’t fix anything.
My advice; get something else. I bought a OpenWRT compatible router for almost half the price. It’s been rock solid since installation, routing IPTV on multicast, and even had ipv6 immediately. The UniFi couldn’t get IPv6 working, and a few other things like DDNS never worked.

It's crazy what a small device Ubiquiti packs its full Unifi UI into. It is no different (apart from the device limitation) from any other Unifi router from Ubiquiti.
The user interface cannot be compared to routers from other brands. You really do get endless options and insights here, but they are very clearly presented. You can also manage other Ubiquiti devices in the same interface. No other manufacturer even comes close to this.
VPN, VLAN, multiple WLANs with guest access, packet inspection, firewall, ... there really is hardly anything you can't configure here.
I've been using it at home for about a month now and I'm very satisfied. Even with just the one Unifi Express, I have WLAN right into the last corner of the flat, where previously the Salt modem could only reach with an extender.
For the price, you really can't go wrong.
The only thing is that the flashing LEDs on the back of the device cannot be deactivated. The LED screen on the front can be deactivated completely or switched off at a certain time (night mode).

It was my first Ubiquity product and I'm kind of moderately enthusiastic about it. I tried in vain for 2 hours to connect a U7 Lite AP and this failed again and again with an unspecific error message. After researching on the net, I had to SSH a network application (v9) onto the Unifi Express that was not officially released to get anything working at all. The whole setup was also horribly slow. In my case, it was not as simple and user-friendly as is always advertised.
The device does not meet my expectations at all. The performance of the user interface is miserable: long connection and loading times for every page. The internet occasionally drops out. Streaming was always good, but when surfing with various tablets or smartphones, there were sudden interruptions.
