Switching from DS1815+ to DS1821+ a piece of cake

When my DS1815+ gave up the ghost after more than 5 years 24/7, it was clear that a new Synology NAS was needed. The migration was a piece of cake. Remove the disk from the old device and install it in the new one. Boot it up and I was back in the race.

    Synology does a good job.

Limit 104TB per volume still exists

Nice NAS, fulfils its purpose. Due to the maximum 1GB Ethernet and maximum speed of the USB 3 interfaces, complete backups take up to a week or longer.
M.2 cache SSDs are fiddly to install, the connectors and clip holders
for the M.2 are wobbly, there is no display on the device whether the SSDs have been recognised. If only 1 or no SSD is displayed online, then the following applies: Shut down the device, remove the HDs, wiggle the SSD, install the HDs, reboot ... It takes some time until the SSD cache is running.

    Pro

    • Easy to install
    • expandable with 2x16GB DDR4 Sodimm (also without ECC)
    • 4x Ethernet
    • runs quietly (but not suitable for living rooms)

    Contra

    • M.2 SSD cache connectors are rather shaky
    • Volume size max. 104TB, 8x18TB Raid 5 are too large for this, so you have to create 2 volumes
    • unfortunately only 4x 1GB Ethernet
    • No useful display on the housing for troubleshooting in the event of boot problems
