The product is falsely advertised: It may be good and fast as a bridge, but it is unsuitable as a repeater - and that is the purpose for which I bought it.

I am thrilled with the ASUS EA-AC87 I purchased today. I use the ASUS EA-AC87 instead of the Swisscom router for the 5G range (in the Swisscom router only 2.4G is still active for older devices).
The ASUS EA-AC87 is connected to the Swisscom router via Switchbox and my 1GB home LAN.
According to the short instructions, I started the ASUS setup in my browser (latest Firefox), changed the password and SSID and entered the key. The access point worked straight away, installation took less than 5 minutes. That's how it should be, and all under Windows 10 Pro! That's fun.

Lousy!
Failures, poor range, outdated firmware.
Reboot necessary every few days
Never again.

The promised range is a disappointment. Even the much-maligned Internet Box of the Swiss telco is much better! The connection has strange dropouts. The firmware has never been changed. So after the purchase, the customer is no longer a customer. I would not buy the device again.

Great product working as desinged. Superb performance!
The ASUS EA-AC87 is a great device, easy to use and reliable. What is definitely certain is that the device is not a repeater!

The RT-AC87U and EA-AC87 duo is really unbeatably fast:
I now copy BluRay files (.m2ts) to the QNAP at up to 86 MB/s. Smaller files (around 500 MB) are even copied at over 150 MB/s.
Smaller files (around 500 MB) even with over 150 MB/s.
Although it's a brand new product, the firmware already seems to be mature.

This WiFi is the best!
I have a FritzBox from a previous configuration, and I wanted to continue using it as a repeater. Unfortunately, there was regular interference due to conflicts with my router, and at the same time I couldn't get a signal anywhere in the house. I often had to place myself strategically to get a strong enough signal without interference.
I replaced the FritzBox with the ASUS EA-AC87, and now I have interference-free network access everywhere in the house. And the signal is strong and fast!

Attention! Not to be used as a repeater as the unit only supports Wireless Distribution System.
I use it as a bridge, it runs great except for a few minor crashes.
I would never buy it again. Must be reset often. Not much use as an AccessPoint
Swisscom TV without network socket!
High definition audio files without delay as with cable...
I am using the EA-AC87 in bridge mode with my RT-AC87U router. The EA-AC87 is about 9m away and has a very good connection to the router.
Two consoles and the TV are connected to the ports.
Everything runs without problems, I am very pleased and would buy it again.

No enthusiasm. Range so-so.
there have been no firmware updates since 2015!
Good quality and beautiful device. Fulfils its purpose (in my case a media bridge).
Although the manufacturer advertises with MIMO technology, this is not switched on in this device, the manufacturer promises since the introduction with a soon upgrade through firmware update, but the last firmware is about 1.5 years old.
The control channel on the main router had to be set specifically so that the connection worked on the AC network.

The first product did not work at all. The settings are not very easy, the connection breaks down all the time. After hours of setting, it works and the next day it doesn't work anymore.

I am trying to use it in the media bridge mode with RT-AC68U and this combination simply does not work reliably. Although achieving 700-800 Mbps, the ac87 drops connection after approximately 24 hours no matter what, and then the only way to restore it is to reboot the ac87. Others seem to have similar issues, probably caused by firmware bugs (?). ASUS must have dropped the real support for this product, the first and only firmware version being from October, 2015.
This is the worst ASUS product I have ever bought.

Use the Asus as an access point to distribute wifi in the basement and connect the devices to the network.
Very stable connection and easy to set up. Not suitable for connecting to mobile phones without dual band wifi as only the 5ghz wifi is covered. But the speed is enormous (Wlan ac).

I have used two of them as APs with one SSID for about 3 months. The connection to the AP is unstable: it sometimes breaks off and does not allow new connections (passphrase is not accepted). In addition, I strangely wait 10-20s for an IP from my DHCP. I do not have this problem with other APs. The latest firmware had to be installed manually (download from Asus support site), as the update wizard only found updates up to the previous version. Despite the firmware update, the problems persist.
However, the connection is quite good at 400Mbit - not bad for the price. Unfortunately, 400Mbit are of no use to me if I have to reboot the APs every few days. Alternative in use for 3 weeks without any problems: Ubiquiti UniFi AP-AC-PRO

I have it in the attic and get the full 250 mbit/s in the room about 10m as the crow flies with the Asus wifi adapter.

If you need a good access point for 5G WLAN, the ASUS EA-AC87 is highly recommended.

I wanted to use the device as a media bridge. Unfortunately, I could not connect it to my Asus RT-AC68U. The search when setting up the EA-AC87 did not even find the device. Nothing. All our 5GHz devices never have problems connecting to the RT-AC68U in the 5GHz band, except now the EA-AC87.
It should have been a 3x4 Mimo connection, which should work. To be sure, I had the opportunity to verify the result elsewhere with an RT-AC68U, with the same result, it didn't work!
As a test, I looked to see if the access point mode at least worked, which it did. So it must be assumed that a hardware defect is unlikely to be the cause. This means that there must be either a firmware bug or some other incompatibility. There is nothing documented anywhere about such a limitation! What strikes me is that all reviews and tests connect the device to an RT-AC87, i.e. do 4x4 Mimo, to show how fast it could be at maximum. A different configuration won't bring this maximum, but it should still be possible. Otherwise, full 802.11ac compatibility is not met.
Because of this, I returned the device to Digitec as a warranty case. Thank you very much for your understanding. I will implement the media bridge as an alternative.

I have an up and downstairs section in my home and wanted a wireless solution to extend the network from the router upstairs to downstairs.
I purchased this extender and out of the box it worked ok with my old d-link router on 5Ghz but the 5Ghz on the d-link has a very limited range so I decided to splash out and get the recommended RT-AC87U which put together should be able to get 400Mbps.
This was a nightmare from the start and the EA-AC87U would simply not see the wireless signal from the RT-AC87U. I tried for hours and eventually with a lot of digging I found a forum post about the firmware.
I upgraded the firmware and the it magically was able to see the 5GHZ wireless signal and connect with a pretty good speed so for now I am happy but it was so buggy to begin with that I was on the verge of returning it.
I hope ASUS get their act together and better support their high-end products.

I use the EA-AC87 as a media bridge in combination with the Asus RT-AC3200 WLAN router. The installation and start-up is simple and quickly done. The system console is clearly laid out and has the most important functions.
Originally I had big problems with the device regarding connection speed and that the channels 100+ did not work. After a manual update of the firmware (3.0.0.4.374_2849 - available on the ASUS homepage), the channels 100+ worked but the device became very unstable and there were constant error messages in the log.
After a long time of trying, I stumbled upon the solution to my problems with the device:
After the manual update, it is mandatory to do a hardware reset. Press the WPS button for 10 seconds while switching on the device!
After that, the device finally works as desired. I have a link speed of 700 - 800 Mbps through 2 walls at about 10-15m. I still have to test the effective download speeds, but they seem to be quite good.
All in all, a device that gave me a big headache at first, but now works as desired.
At the price of the device, however, one must consider whether one should not rather take an old AC router from Asus and operate it as a media bridge. It's cheaper, more flexible and just as fast.
In combination with the Asus RT-AC87 router, which also supports 4x4 MU-MIMO, the device makes more sense.

I bought it for the bridge function but it was extremely bad. Speed was actually ok but the connection kept dropping and I had to reconnect all the time. I looked for a solution and downloaded the latest firmware I could find. After that, it wouldn't work at all and is now just more junk!

I used the device as an AP at the beginning, but it was just standing around for the most part. Now, after 12 months, I want to use it as a media bridge, but it doesn't work. The connection with the router does not work, neither via WPS nor manually. It's just junk. After several resets or restarts, it still doesn't work. Upgrading the firmware doesn't work either. The device is broken. Strange, just after the warranty period. Was it planned that way?
