If the bin is outside, then there is no need for a filter. The filter is meant for the smell. By the way, it has already fallen in on me. I washed it in the dishwasher.

If you make sure that the filter does not get wet, i.e. do not fill the container too much before emptying it, it can last a good three months. At the beginning I made the mistake of washing the filter (with the lid), then the filter quickly becomes thin and no longer holds in the opening.
