Does anyone know where the small rectangular foam filter is fitted? It fell out and I can't understand where it comes from.

The rectangular foam filter belongs behind the rear air intake opening and is inserted into the shaft provided.

Are additional installations (such as exhaust pipes) necessary? Or can the unit be connected to the mains and run?

Just connect the unit to the power and it will run.
