Although I don't have a Phillips device, I connected it to an older Samsung TV set via optical and set the TV to very quiet. I chose this option because the TV speakers were faulty and, lo and behold, much better.

The part gets no audio signal in, neither with HDMI (ARC) nor with Toslink. On the Panasonic TV LX-39EM5E, I don't see any option to set the internal speakers to off (do I have to do that?). What's the problem, TV too old? wrong remote control (not the original one)? any other ideas?

Yes of course, via HDMI Arc absolutely perfect!

Can the conventional TV remote control also be used when the Soundbar is connected with an optical cable?

No. Via Bluetooth: not either. Via HDMI: not tested but the volume control should work (HDMI cable ≥ 1.3, the TV supports HDMI-CEC and it is activated).
