If you are working on mac you can import it in free version, on windows you can't, you will need a Studio version on windows to work with xavc-s footage. you can always transcode it to another friendly codec to work in free version on windows but that is just another step in you workflow.

So far, upgrades between versions have been free. However there is no guarantee of this from BM; it's essentially a courtesy on their behalf. The key I got was for v17 but it activated v18 no questions asked.

I was able to update my 17 key to 18b2 without any problems, so it should work - I can't answer whether the whole 18 StableRelase/Gold works with the 17 key, as long as 18 is not gold.
