Beatrix Potter did not have many friends in her childhood, but she had access to art and culture. Potter started with postcard designs and created Peter Rabbit and other characters in letters she wrote to children. The first Peter Rabbit story was published by her, and only afterward did she receive a contract. In the first year alone, over 50,000 copies were sold.
