Katsushika Hokusai is regarded as the most significant representative of Japanese Ukiyo-e, the genre of Japanese printmaking and painting that reflected the feelings of the population during the Edo period in "pictures of the floating world." His most famous work is the series "36 Views of Mount Fuji" (1829-1833), and the image "The Great Wave off Kanagawa," included in this cycle, is likely the most famous Japanese artwork of all time. The masterful color woodblock prints had a lasting influence on Impressionist painters and inspired artists such as Vincent van Gogh, Egon Schiele, and Gustav Klimt.
