The USS Nautilus (SSN-571) was the world's first nuclear-powered submarine and the sixth ship in the fleet to bear the name Nautilus. On January 17, 1955, the order to cast off all lines was given, and the historic message "On Nuclear Power" was signaled. In the following years, the Nautilus broke all speed and distance records underwater and was the first submarine to circumnavigate the North Pole underwater.
