The Hughes H-4 Hercules, nicknamed Goose by critics, was designed as a transatlantic transport aircraft for use during World War II but was completed only after the war. Due to restrictions on the use of aluminum during the war and concerns about weight, the aircraft was built almost entirely from birch wood. It was the largest amphibious aircraft ever flown, although it completed only a brief flight on November 2, 1947. The aircraft is in good condition and is currently on display at the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum.
