Piet Hein Eek, one of the leading designers in the Netherlands, is usually known for his pieces of furniture made of old wood, which have made him famous worldwide. However, the Dutch designer is more versatile. Unimpressed by any rules or conventions, he designs and develops furniture, lighting, and accessories, as well as complete interiors. Perhaps it's the 'going against the grain' mentality that Eek and LEFF Amsterdam see in each other - why should we make clocks when time is omnipresent these days? The answer lies in the challenge of creating a beautiful timepiece when no one really needs a watch anymore. In collaboration with LEFF Amsterdam, Piet Hein Eek has created the TUBE series, a timeless design collection consisting of a watch, a speaker, and a wristwatch.
Piet Hein Eek: "The original idea was to create a watch that they could build and modify themselves. This requires a technical and logical design that is easy to assemble. My starting point was a steel tube and an extrusion ring, which is used to design the dial. We found the first prototype so impressive that further modification was unnecessary. The final design was so plausible that you'd think it would already exist - but it doesn't yet. For many designers, a simple and straightforward way of thinking is not an option to make something extraordinary." So one thing led to another.
The extrusion ring in the TUBE watch had the potential to be further developed, and so the idea for the TUBE wristwatch was born. Unlike the watch where aesthetics were the result of the concept, the wristwatch uses the extrusion ring as the starting point for the design. The precise cut and the high-quality materials give the watch its refined and at the same time robust and industrial character. Both models, one available with a leather strap and the other with a steel bracelet, offer a different interpretation of the iconic dial.
