Added value of OM5 technology. OM5 technology offers a range of improvements over previous quality classes. Previous multimode fibers are optimized for an optical window or wavelength range of 850 nm. Outside of this window, signals are heavily attenuated, requiring Ethernet signals to be transmitted over multiple parallel-connected multimode fibers. For example, 10-gigabit Ethernet requires two fibers (one for sending, one for receiving). In 40- or 100-gigabit Ethernet applications, signals are transmitted over eight fibers.
