During the Cold War, every strategist's dream was undoubtedly to have a strategic bomber with the payload and range of the B-52, but capable of flying faster than the B-58. This led to the development of the B-70 program. After years of development and a head-to-head competition with Boeing, North American Aviation was declared the winner in December 1957. The first 30 aircraft were scheduled to enter service in 1965. However, by 1959 it became clear that the new air combat scenarios would not allow the B-70 to survive in a hostile environment, leading to a drastic reduction of the program. In the end, only two prototypes were completed, with the first flying in September 1964. The XB-70, however, proved capable of exceeding Mach 3 and is now regarded by many scientists and aviation enthusiasts as one of the most beautiful aircraft ever built.
