It was developed immediately after the war, with the first prototypes built in 1947. It was characterized by a 4x4 all-wheel drive and a robust and reliable construction that could handle even the most difficult and demanding terrains. The aluminum body made it lighter, while also being more corrosion-resistant and durable. By 1971, when the Series III was introduced, more than one million units had already been produced. It was available in either the 88-inch version with a standard wheelbase or the 109-inch version with a long wheelbase. Thanks to its exceptional versatility, it was used in both military and civilian sectors. Interesting versions were made for fire departments and equipped with firefighting equipment.
