The CANT Z.501 "Gabbiano" was a medium flying boat designed for sea patrol, created in the 1930s by engineer Filippo Zappata for the Cantieri Riuniti dell'Adriatico (C.R.D.A.). The aircraft was characterized by its large high-wing and side floats, making it suitable for patrol, search, and rescue missions at sea. It was equipped with an Isotta Fraschini Asso XI engine with 900 horsepower, providing it with a good flight range and a maximum speed of 275 km/h. It began its operational use during the Spanish Civil War but was primarily used intensively by the Regia Aeronautica in the Mediterranean during World War II. To defend against air attacks, it was armed with three Breda-SAFAT machine guns in 7.7 mm caliber and could carry a limited offensive payload.
