The Lockheed AC-130 Spectre is an armed version of the C-130 Hercules. The AC-130 was developed for tactical support and initially replaced the AC-47 and AC-119 in air support during the Vietnam War. The USAF utilized the AC-130 for close air support, air interdiction, and troop protection.

Close air support also included assistance to ground forces, convoy escort, and operations in populated areas. Air interdiction missions were conducted against planned and tactical targets, while troop protection missions involved air defense of fixed installations and fortifications.

The first AC-130 gunship arrived in South Vietnam in September 1967 and was deployed later that same year. After the Vietnam War, the American Air Forces produced additional series of these aircraft based on the C-130 H, which were equipped with significantly more powerful four-engine configurations and received an improved navigation system as well as night vision devices.

The AC-130H was designated "Spectre" and has been used in all conflicts led by American forces over the past decade. Following further upgrades, it is still in use today in the Afghanistan conflict.
