Product details
In late 1968, the U.S. Army awarded contracts to several companies to conduct research for a program aimed at developing a tactical multi-role transport helicopter for amphibious operations and cargo transport. The program was designated UTTAS (Utility Tactical Transport Air System) and had the following requirements: a three-person crew, the ability to transport 11-15 soldiers in the cockpit, a twin-engine setup, and the capability to transport the helicopter itself in a transport aircraft. Of the nine companies that submitted designs for the UTTAS helicopter, the U.S. Department of Defense selected two - Boeing-Vertol and Sikorsky. After the completion of tests, the Army chose Sikorsky as the winner of the UTTAS program in 1976, and a contract was signed for the production of the first series of helicopters, which were designated by the Army as UH-60A Black Hawk (the production designation is Sikorsky S-70).
