It is a two-seat, twin-engine aircraft with variable wings. The first Tornado flew on August 14, 1974, and the first delivery of the Tornado IDS to the German Air Force took place on July 27, 1979. Production ended in 1998, with a total of 992 aircraft of all variants built. There are three main versions of the Tornado: the Tornado IDS strike bomber, which served in both interdiction and strike roles.
