Derived from an R5 Alpine body, which was modified by the body manufacturer Heuliez, the Renault 5 Turbo was unveiled as a concept car at the Paris Motor Show in 1978. Classified in Group 4 in September 1980, the prototype's first participation took place a few months earlier at the Giro d'Italia.
