The Jaguar was the first of many successful Anglo-French aviation projects since the 1960s. Both France and Great Britain urgently needed a light, simple, and cost-effective ground attack aircraft. The study for such an aircraft was commissioned to Breguet in France (later Dassault-Breguet) and to the British Aircraft Corporation as part of SEPECAT (Société européenne pour la fabrication d'un avion de combat et d'auxiliaire tactique).
