The CL-215 was the first aircraft specifically designed from the outset for fighting wildfires. It was intended to replace the French and Canadian Canso Catalina amphibious aircraft. After the Canadian aircraft manufacturer received 10 orders from the French "Protection Civile" and 20 from the Province of Quebec, it decided to launch its new aircraft on February 1, 1966. The water bomber, certified in Canada, France, and the USA, could take on up to 1,414 US gallons in just 12 seconds.
