For example, it eliminates ground loops when connecting a cable or satellite system to a HiFi setup. When connecting cable TV or satellite TV, the shielding of the cable may have a different ground potential than the existing devices in the house. In such cases, a loud 50 Hertz hum can be heard from the HiFi system when plugging in the connector.
