Perseverance began its journey to the Jezero Crater on Mars on July 30, 2020. The rover is powered by a plutonium energy source and equipped with a variety of instruments to assist in its mission to search for signs of past life on Mars and collect data to support future manned missions. Ingenuity, the 4-pound helicopter that launched with Perseverance, features four specially designed carbon fiber blades arranged in two rotors that spin in opposite directions at about 2,400 revolutions per minute - much faster than a helicopter on Earth. It is a separate experiment from the rover and aims to demonstrate technologies needed for flying in the Martian atmosphere.
