Category 6A is a standard that arises from the increased bandwidth requirements of 10-Gigabit Ethernet (10 GBASE-T). Cat 6A cables are designed for transmission frequencies up to 500 MHz and distances up to 100 m, and are backward compatible with existing categories.

Unlike conventional PVC cables, these cables have a halogen-free jacket, which excludes the dangerous release of halogenated combustion gases and minimizes smoke generation. Halogen-free cables are also flame-retardant and do not exhibit a dangerous ignition cord effect.

Screened Foiled Twisted Pair (S/FTP) refers to cables that have a metallic shield around each pair of wires (FTP) and additionally a metallic overall shield (S). Shielded cables exhibit little impedance or reactance variation compared to unshielded cables. The transmission parameters remain relatively constant and better than those of UTP cables, even at high frequencies.
