Sketch the desired design with a pencil and carve it either into the line or the background using a linoleum cutter. Always cut away from yourself, as the blades can be very sharp. Evenly apply linoleum paint to the printing plate with a linoleum roller, place a piece of paper over the printing plate, and roll over the back of the paper. Alternatively, you can print with a relief printing press, which can create even sharper lines.

Creative work with linoleum plates is a classic in art education. However, this ancient craft is also exciting for others, from professional artists to anyone who enjoys experimenting with new crafting techniques. If you want to create small images, you can cut the plate into smaller pieces – and even if you don’t have a relief printing press, you can still make great prints with a good old linoleum roller.
