Product Description

In 1952, Mercedes-Benz returned to motorsport with the newly developed racing car type 300SL (W194). The streamlined sports car, with its unusual entry through a high-swinging flap that extended from the bottom edge of the side window to the middle of the roof, immediately captivated racing enthusiasts. After a successful debut at the Mille Miglia, the 300SL was set to compete again for victory at the international sports car race for the Grand Prix of Bern on May 18, 1952.

Three officially registered 300SL cars in unusually colorful paint schemes for Mercedes—dark red (Rudolf Caracciola, #16), green (Karl Kling, #18), and blue (Hermann Lang, #20)—along with a spare vehicle in silver driven by Fritz Riess (#22), took on competitors from Ferrari, Lancia, Aston Martin, and Jaguar. In the end, Mercedes celebrated an impressive triple victory with Karl Kling as the winner, followed by Hermann Lang and Fritz Riess in second and third place, respectively. Unfortunately, the joy of victory was overshadowed by the tragic accident of Rudolf Caracciola, who went off the track in the 13th lap due to a blocked front brake and crashed into a tree. He was hospitalized with a thigh fracture and other injuries.

His recovery took a long time, and the bone fracture, along with knee surgery, left lasting impairments to his right leg, marking the end of his racing career.
