The craft of wood turning was developed around 1800 in Seiffen in the Erzgebirge and remains an integral part of Erzgebirge folk art to this day. The wood turner shapes a piece of wood on a lathe, creating a wooden ring with the profile of the desired figure. These figures are used to make toys or to adorn Christmas pyramids.
