Bauer Exclusive Atalante 1937 Type 57SC

The connection between classic elegance and modern high-performance sports was achieved by Jean Bugatti, son of Ettore Bugatti, with the creation of the 57S in 1936. The "S" stands for "Surbaissé," which is French for lowered. This lowering was accomplished by routing the rear axle directly through the chassis instead of beneath it. The 57S also differs from the standard type 57 with sharper camshafts, a dry sump lubrication system, and a magneto ignition. Only two examples of the 57S series were factory-equipped with a supercharger. 57542 was one of these two cars. A total of 42 chassis were built; and at that time, the price of this chassis alone exceeded the purchase price of a spacious villa.

To do justice to this very sporty chassis, Jean Bugatti personally designed a highly impressive, sporty-elegant coupe that has gone down in history as one of the most beautiful bodies of the 57S series. This was named "Atalante." Unique to the Bugatti 57S was the V-shaped bent radiator, which looked significantly more aggressive than the flat radiator typically used by Bugatti. Many of the Atalante bodies featured a striking two-tone paint scheme, making the vehicle a unique eye-catcher. With this design, Jean Bugatti created a lasting monument in the history of automotive design. The model is based on the only original factory-bodied Atalante with a supercharged 57SC and original body by Jean Bugatti.
