Katsushika Hokusai is considered the most important representative of Japanese ukiyo-e, the genre of Japanese printmaking and painting that reflected the lifestyle of the population during the Edo period in "images of the flowing world". His best-known work is the series of paintings "36 Views of Mount Fuji" (1829-1833); the painting "The Great Wave off Kanagawa" included in this cycle is probably the most famous Japanese artwork of all. The masterful colour woodcuts had a lasting influence on Impressionist painters and inspired artists such as Vincent van Gogh, Egon Schiele and Gustav Klimt.
