Although the German Panzerkampfwagen VI Tiger heavy tank was introduced into combat in September 1942, it is still regarded as the most famous tank model in the world. With a fearsome combination of firepower, armored protection, and mobility, the Tiger's 88-mm gun, supported by excellent targeting optics, allowed it to engage enemy tanks at extreme distances, far beyond the range at which they could return fire. In fact, during the initial Tiger deployments on the Eastern Front, the most likely way a Tiger was destroyed was by its own crew, who desperately tried to prevent one of these magnificent machines from falling into enemy hands. Since its introduction, the Tiger has been the tank against which all others are measured, and a large number of Allied tanks and military vehicles fell victim to its gun.
