The White Motor Company began the study and development of the M3 in 1938 to provide the United States Army with an armored reconnaissance vehicle. Equipped with a Hercules 6-cylinder JXD gasoline engine producing 110 hp, it achieved a maximum speed of 81 km/h. Fitted with four drive wheels, it was used for operations such as patrolling, reconnaissance, and command formations. The vehicle could transport 8 personnel and was armed on the sides with a Browning M2 machine gun, 12.7 mm, and two additional Browning guns, 7.7 mm. It was first deployed in 1941 during the campaign in the Philippines and subsequently in North Africa and Sicily. During the war, the M3 was replaced for advanced research purposes by the more modern M8 Greyhound. It was used not only by the American Army but also by the British and French forces, as well as in some units of the Red Army, where it was employed at the Eastern Front for towing the ZIS-3, 76 mm guns.
