The model is a replica of the KA-6D Intruder. The A-6 Intruder was introduced in the mid-1960s as a ground attack aircraft to replace outdated planes such as the propeller-driven A-1 Skyraider and A-3 Skywarrior. The Grumman Corporation developed and designed the A-6A based on U.S. Navy specifications, creating an all-weather medium attack aircraft with two jet engines that could be deployed from American aircraft carriers. The "Intruder" was characterized by a robust fuselage and a side-by-side cockpit configuration for the pilot and the weapons officer. To meet the needs of the U.S. Marine Corps, a tanker aircraft was required to provide aerial refueling support for strike aircraft. The KA-6D version was born in 1970. The KA-6D was directly derived from the A-6A airframe and was equipped with an internal hose and reel refueling system, as well as additional underwing pylon tanks.
