The twin-engine Fokker F-27 Friendship was developed in the 1950s by the Dutch aircraft manufacturer to provide a valid successor to the old traditional piston-engine Douglas DC-3, which had been in service since World War II. The Fokker F-27 achieved immediate commercial success in both civilian and military sectors and was even produced under license in the United States. Thanks to its two 2,250 hp Rolls-Royce turboprop engines, the Fokker reached a maximum speed of 460 km/h. Since its production start, it has been adopted by many airlines, which found it to be the best solution for short-haul flights. The use of two turboprop engines reduced vibrations compared to conventional piston engines, resulting in improved onboard comfort. The aircraft was very versatile and was frequently used for cargo transport activities, troop transport missions, and maritime patrols.
