From June 16 to 18, 1815, French and allied troops clashed on the battlefields of present-day Belgium. Initially, there were skirmishes at Ligny and Quatre Bras, followed by the most famous battle in military history at Waterloo on June 18. English General Wellington had fortified his men in the stronghold of La Haye Sainte. In the afternoon, Napoleon ordered Marshal Ney to launch an attack on the farm. The fighting was fierce, and the French were on the verge of taking the homestead by early evening. However, it was too late; shortly thereafter, the Prussians under the command of Field Marshal Blücher arrived to support the British army and dealt Napoleon his worst defeat.
