The self-propelled artillery pieces of the M-110 series formed the backbone of the field artillery of the U.S. Army and allied forces for many years. They were introduced into service in the 1960s, but thanks to improvements made starting in 1977, the M-110 A1 version achieved enhanced operational efficiency. The M-110 A1 was equipped with the new long-range 203-mm M201 howitzer, capable of using a wide range of ammunition. The design featured an excellent combination of firepower and mobility across all terrains, achieved through the optimization of the chassis, which was also used in the M-107. It was deployed in artillery divisions to provide support fire, engage in artillery duels, and combat enemy positions. It saw extensive use during the Lebanon conflict and the first Gulf War.
